Hackett shows early promise!

The 2nd race in the Derby Runner 2011/12 XC series took place at Bagworth Heath Wood on Sunday in spring like conditions. This otherwise excellent venue is usually synonymous with cold and wet conditions and ankle deep mud; instead the main danger to competitors was from the dry, rutted ground. The superb conditions again led to a good turnout of 360 competitors and a very competitive race. South Derbyshire Road Runners were represented by nine runners with Chris Mason again leading the way home with a 68th place finish in 35.17, which was also good enough to maintain his early lead in the V60 category. Next home was the ever improving Roger Matthews who ran well for his 86th place finish. The next finisher was newcomer Simon Hackett whose 108th place finish in 37.24 was a superb effort in his first ever race. Paul McKay again showed his quality and experience over the country to record a 125th place finish and the 3rd V60 spot, 19 places ahead of Steve Leafe, who battled well despite his exertions in last weekend's Palma Majorca Half Marathon. There was then fairly tight packing from the last 3 finishers for the Club in the Men's race with Club Chairman, Malcolm Moore leading the way home from Daniel Towns and Adrian Middleton in 176th, 180th and 190th places respectively. Again, Cath Johnson was the only Club representative in the Women's Race and she battled well to finish in 111th place.

The next, and penultimate, race in the Club Championship series is the Shepshed 7 on 6th November 2011 with the next XC fixture being at Foremarke Reservoir on Sunday, 20th November 2011.
